Global warming is slowly but inexorably altering the planet we love and depend on for life. There is every chance that those changes will extensively damage the complex civilization we live in or even make life itself unlivable in a far too near future. So what can be done? I challenge you to add to the ideas below.
(Not my idea) Develop solar collectors that be incorporated into the surface of roads and install them on all federal and state highways with accompanying power storage sites.
Involve children in the effort to save the planet for their generation. Every school in every country would be responsible for planting and maintaining the health of a nearby area of forest or park land. Classes could take field trips twice each year per class to do this. Students would plant new trees, prune and assist young ones, and clear undergrowth that could lead to fires. (under environmentalist supervision). Government funds would support this by paying for seeds, chartered bus trips, and expert supervision by trained college students.
New technologies are beginning to manifest that allow us to actually remove CO2 from the air and they will be essential to stop the feedback loops that have already begun. However, they must be disseminated widely and supported if they are to save us. Similar to the effort made in the New Deal that brought America out of the Great Depression, use government funds to pay the homeless and the unemployed to work on these projects so that they become common features of the landscape everywhere and the CO2 is transferred, not into fuel sources that would reenter the atmosphere, but into building materials that take it out permanently.
Rather than causing extra burdens for the poor by raising the price of gas in an effort to restrain its use, raise the price of new gas burning vehicles so that only the rich can purchase them (at exorbitant prices) Take the major part of this money and offer it as rebates to those who buy electric or other non-polluting cars so that no new environmentally friendly car costs more than $10,000 to the consumer.
Ever feel frustrated by the few opportunties available for ordinary people to come together to discuss solutions to the problems facing our society? This site is designed to be a place where anyone can put ideas forward that might help to make this a better world to live in for all. Serious, well-stated, positive ideas by caring people will be added to the site for others to use or expand on. To contribute, contact Francesca Hampton, at cesca.hampton@gmail.com
